Large antique engraved bronze tripod Censer xuande mark on base.

9.45 H x 10.24 Diameter and weighs 11.33 lb. Exceptional condition given age and marks indicate it has been used over an extended period.

Fine large panel engravings on 2 panels depict the same farming scene with 2 Chinese figures, a scholar with a book on an ox and a second figure holding a basket. The censer is cast with a compressed globular body flanked by two loop handles. The base is cast with a xuande mark. Censers are used for incense burning and generally found at the entrance of temples. The first Chinese bronze censers are recorded as far back as 1600BC.

moreCensors were/are most often used at temples. They are filled with sand and incense sticks are lit and placed in them. As a result of being outside the sand often gets wet. This censor has tiny holes in the feet consistent with wet sand being in contact with the base over many many decades (it takes a long long time for water to erode little holes in bronze!!). You can see the little pinprick holes when you look at the image of the tripod feet. Other than these age related pin holes in the feet the censor is in great condition with the engravings still being clearly visible less
