Both the cup and the saucer are marked with green underglaze factory mark “H&C/L”, dating back to 1876-1889, and red overglaze decorator mark “Haviland &C Limoges”. dating back to 1893-1931. As the pieces were factory decorated, the undecorated blanks must have been made at earlier date and stored for some time before being decorated and distributed in 1890s.
The set is a rare and exciting example of European Arts and Crafts design and early Haviland craftsmanship. Thin-walled cup with partially translucent relief decor changes color and overall appearance depending on the color of the liquid in it, enriching a simple process of drinking tea or coffee with beauty and intimate aesthetic qualities.
The cup is 2.1″ tall with 3.2″ diameter opening; the saucer is 5.2″ in diameter with sides that are 1″ tall. The set is in excellent antique condition.
