This is a wonderful antique six legged side or gueridon table in expressive solid and turned oak with a scalloped top, made in the late 19th century.
A great and sophisticated design, this – presumably Flemish – side table. The six turned legs made from solid oak show great craftsmanship and attention to detail. The lovely scalloped top in oak shows a beautiful rich wood grain. Especially the medullary rays are very present. These medullary rays or pith rays, are those lighter colored thin, ribbon-like structures you see when you pay close attention to the oak. They run vertically through the wood, perpendicular to the growth rings and transport nutrients and water between the cambium layers and the center of the tree. With this particular table, they also have a wonderful esthetic function, showing great textures and patterns.
Since this table is quite large it could also be used as a gueridon table in a hallway.
It comes in a honest and good condition with signs of age and use.
