Vintage Design
A Superb “Elgin Leather Works” Bombay Travel Wardrobe. Made from leather with brass fittings this is a unique piece of campaign luggage, comprising of a drop front and an open top which reveals a removable tray, underneath, lies another storage tray, the lid has a drop down storage compartment. The front, which has a brass lock and side clasps, opens a drop down front to reveal the inner wardrobe, the front has a leather expandable storage pocket, this travel wardrobe has so much to offer, full of charm, and remains in original condition. The makers mark “Elgin Leather Works” Esplanade Road, Fort Bombay is labelled through out. C1900
Any furniture specifically made to break down or fold for ease of travel can be described as campaign furniture. It was designed to be packed up and carried on the march. It has been used by traveling armies since at least the time of Julius Caesar but it is commonly associated with British Army Officers, many of whom had purchased their commissions.
