An antique wire mesh mask used by members of the Odd Fellows organization. Hand painted with red and white painted eyes, cheek bones, nostrils, frown lines and faint red lips. Wool applied to the eyebrows, mustache and beard line. Either human or synthetic hair used for the hair and beard. The mask is molded to easily fit the face.

HISTORY

Along with the Freemasons, the Odd Fellows are considered one of the oldest fraternal organizations in the world. Created in a time where social services were non-existent, the Odd Fellows dedicated themselves to charity, helping the poor and sick. It is the aim of members to “to improve and elevate every person to a higher, nobler plane; to extend sympathy and aid to those in need, making their burdens lighter, relieving the darkness of despair; to war against vice in every form, and to be a great moral power and influence for the good of humanity.”

Many of the founding members were Catholic, which in 1700s England was still a marginalized religion. The Odd Fellows were forced underground, being a member was considered a criminal offense. Passwords and secret handshakes were employed and the organization was shrouded in secrecy to avoid the watchful eyes of the Protestant ruling class. This secrecy followed the Odd Fellows into the Americas where they split from England over concerns of allowing African Americans to join. The I.O.O.F. only removed racial language from their membership guidelines in 1971.

The 1930s and the Great Depression saw the decline of the Odd Fellows. Members were suddenly unable to pay their fees and with Roosevelt’s new social reforms the charitable work of the Odd Fellows was not needed. Many of their buildings were repurposed and skeletons were quite literally found in their closets. One of the initiation rites of the Odd Fellows was to kiss or look a human skeleton in the face to face ones own mortality. Other initiation rites were a little more comedic and downright goofy. In the 1800s, the DeMoulin Brothers of Illinois, started a Fraternal supply mail order catalogue. With a background in the prank industry, creating wooden goats to ride during initiations and spanking machines for Fraternal organizations only seemed a natural fit. The DeMoulin brothers also sold Fraternal regalia such as robes, uniforms and masks.

A unique set of 4 antique Japanese silk brocade “Oshie” art Showa puppet dolls. Elegantly displayed in an acrylic shadow box frame. Circa early 20th century. The geisha-style dolls were traditionally made with layered kimono fabric that are hand-pressed together to give a three-dimensional look. “Oshie” is a traditional Japanese craft that dates back to the 17th century. Dimensions: 36.75″w x 2.25″d x 20.5″h (framed). In very good vintage condition.

Stunning pair of hardwood wall brackets crafted meticulously by hand and carved accentuating a central shell shape with an architecturally layered and stacked form beneath, made in Italy signature on the back.

This vintage US Virgin Islands flag is made from a cotton cloth with printed emblem visible on both sides. Please note staining and other wear from age and storage, including bluish tint to white background. Made in USA by the former Dettra Flag Co. Mid to late 20th century.

A French carved-wood wall plaque from the early 19th century. This antique wall decoration from France is rectangular in shape, and has been exquisitely hand-carved with an oval center depicting a female warrior flanked by two decoratively raised panels with tulip bouquets within acanthus leaf-trimmed boarders. A large pair of scrolling volutes accentuate either far end of the plaque, with the acanthus leaf trim continuing about the upper and lower molded portions of the piece. The wood has a lovely aged patina with tiny worm holes that add just that much more character to the piece; a reflection of its centuries old age. This early 19th century wall plaque, with warrioress carving at center, is nicely sized at a width of just over 4.5 feet.

Vintage metal handpainted sign. Sign has a handpainted rabbit and “Jack Rabbit Brands” painted on front. Sign is pitted from age and has a well hanger already installed in back.

Each demi-lune shelf over a vasiform-mirrored plate set within foliate scrolling brackets.
