An interesting late 18th century elm Sack-back Windsor Rocking Chair.
Interesting and rare continuous bentwood fanback construction, outward-curving spindles, bowed arm rest terminating in webbed knuckles with shaped handholds, solid elm seat with subtle saddle shaping, bulb-turned legs mounted to rockers with pins, original rockers, morticed through the single arm bow and up into the tall back hoop.
A scarce highly original example of an early 19th century West Country Windsor armchair.
The whole piece in restored condition and with a fetching patina from 200 years of daily use.
New England, c. 1780.
Dimensions: 38 1/2, seat ht. 16 1/2 in.
