19th Century Thonet Original Theatre Seats. Founded in the early 19th Century by Michael Thonet, Thonet invented the process of steam bending wood under pressure and used this to design the classic bentwood chairs still in production today. In the 19th Century he had a large network of shops throughout Europe and was a huge furniture retailer. This is an extraordinary set of theatre seats with two connected seats joined together in one bench frame. Made for a theatre in Vienna these are well documented original Thonet seats and are exceptionally rare. The chairs have been gently refurbished in our own workshops and are in excellent working condition. The seats are made in the classic bentwood style of early Thonet pieces with decorative use of hooped forms showcasing the exceptional craft of the Thonet process. The chairs have a rich dark colour and character. Seat Height 45cm
