Opened in 1875, Liberty became known for worldly, cultured goods with avant-garde and exotic designs. Indeed, Oscar Wild affirmed: “Liberty is the chosen resort of the artistic shopper”. During the 1890s, Liberty built strong relationships with many British silver designers such as William Hair Hassler and the renowned silversmith Archibald Knox, both of whose silverware epitomized the styles of the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts movements.
