Vintage Design
Official’s Hat’ or ‘Yoke-Back’ styled chairs continue to be made with very little change, which is exceptional given that there are example drawings dating back from as early as the 6th century. This particular pair of chairs are in a simple yet classic style, with attractive flowing curves that are such an important part of Chinese chair design, seen here not only in the toprails, but also in the rear sloping side posts, arms and backrests. Modest carved decoration shapes the aprons below each seat and the small spandrels under the curved armrests.
The footrests and supporting braces step up from front to back, this is a feature incorporated intentionally and referred to as ‘bubugao’ in Chinese (meaning ‘step higher’). The original dark lacquer finish is largely intact, though worn around the seat, arms and backrest to give an interesting patina, adding to their character and charm.
This handsome and elegant pair are in a classic Chinese design, and would make a welcoming focal point in any hallway, reception room or living area.
