An unusual pair Arts & Crafts Roberts & Belk Sheffield silver plated ‘cat’ ball end knife rests the design attributed to renowned Scottish born designer Christopher Dresser (British, 1834-1904) and dated 1889. The knife rests have a more modern ‘sputnik like appearance with a large ball shape centre with six protruding tubular rods with smaller ball terminals. The ball terminals feature strongly on a number of the designs produced by Dresser for Hukin & Heath and is very typically and recognizably in his style with similar use of balls on toast racks and other serving pieces. Both knife rests are marked with an Aladdin lamp and bith have registration numbers dating the pieces to 1889.
