Vintage Design
These handsome chairs are made from willow, a flexible material – allowing the curved, rounded rail that forms the chair’s arms and top to be shaped from a single piece of wood. The wonderfully curved arms, distinctive of the horseshoe armchair, are supported at each side by three rounded stiles, and the backsplats taper up from bottom to top, each decorated with a circular floral motif. Original metal brackets at the top and bottom that fixed the backsplats in place are still intact and visible.
The pair are in a more ‘vernacular’ style of the grander looking horseshoe armchairs that were traditionally used for important guests. The seats are relatively narrow on the chairs, fitted within legs that are also shaped from single pieces of wood either side.
The original black lacquer has largely worn over the years and through use, on the feet, arms, seat and footrest to show the paler wood below, adding charm and character to the simple, rustic look of the chairs.
