The subtly changing sky-blue background of this fascinating carpet, obtained by means of a number of colour gradations, creates the impression of a sea on which floats a sun-like lozenge, spangled by polychrome rosettes. The refined primitivism of certain rug typologies from Azerbaijan is often the result of a fusion between the abstract tribal tradition and the more cultured one derived from the sophisticated urban ateliers. The excellent preservation of this example enables it to represent the pinnacle of nineteenth century Azerbaijani rug weaving, and probably one of the highest manifestations of an antique decorative carpet in general. An extremely rare carpet of great beauty in mint condition, as well as an excellent example of how a rug can become part of a heirloom.
