Vintage Design
This elegant pair of armchairs were produced in Shanxi province late 19th century in a ‘Southern Official’ style, where the arms continue down to meet the seat on curved posts rather than extending out.
Along with the wonderful curved, narrow arm posts, the backrests are subtly curved for comfort and are each beatifully decorated with a circular long life symbol in carved relief.
The black lacquer finish is original and largely intact, with some signs of wear towards the front of each seat and on the foot rests – adding to the warmth and character of a beautiful chair set in a classic Chinese design.
