If you have been selling art and antiques as long as we have then you learn to recognize not only the difference between good quality and top quality, but also between rare and extremely rare. This unique Arts and Crafts chess table with drawer falls under the latter category with regards to both aspects. First of all, the design is breath taking and that design alone, tells us this piece can only have been created by one of the best designers that lived and worked here in Holland in the earliest years of the 1900s. This particular design exemplifies the typical Dutch Arts and Crafts style, one that would later be at the forefront of the Amsterdam School design era. Getting the design of this remarkable table on paper is one thing, but they clearly also managed to find the maker/studio who/that was capable of perfectly executing this awesome chess table. The attention to detail is awesome and clearly only the best materials were used and the end-result is of museum quality. Apart from some wear/minor damage to the rim of the table top, this chess table truly is in superb condition. However, what (in our view) makes this piece important in the historical sense is its rarity. In all our years of selling antiques we have never seen a pure Arts and Crafts chess table and when we surf the worldwide web there aren’t any to be found, not anywhere in the world. It is that rarity that takes this pure Arts and Crafts chess table to a league of its own. As you can see it has a stunning look and feel and that is also because of its incredible patina. With a good size chess field and its individual squares being as large as 2.5 inches in width and length, this unique chess table is extremely pleasing to the eye and practical to use and enjoy. Other exceptional features are the pure Arts and Crafts brass handle on the solid coromandel and oak drawer, the also solid coromandel side panels, the superbly designed legs and finally the inlaid, ebonized patterns in both the ‘feet’ and in the corners of the table top. It simply will not get any better than this. So if you are a collector of truly rare Arts and Crafts pieces in general and a chess enthousiast in particular then maybe you should be the next custodian of this one of a kind antique.
Mind you, our fair price for this unique work-of-decorative-art-chess-table even includes perfect packing (in a custom made and padded crate) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 workdays.
