This pitcher and tumbler, designed by Wedgwood in 1877, is a unique example of majolica pottery. Most majolica pieces are decorated: adorned with Renaissance-inspired designs, heavily ornamented in the Victorian taste, or covered in Japanese motifs. This pitcher and tumbler, on the other hand, is simply glazed in earth brown and cobalt majolica glazes, making a bold and surprisingly modern visual impact. The set’s simplicity celebrates the technical innovation of majolica glazes. Developed in England in the mid-19th century, the glazes were revolutionary for their vast palette of bright, translucent colors, all of which could be fired at the same time.
